POTD: Vegas Abstract #3

Vegas Abstract #3 Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

The balconies (or maybe they’re not really balconies, just some sunshade or simple design element–hard to tell) on the building on the left of this image seem very dynamic viewed from this angle. It’s almost as if the image is a freeze-frame capture of them being sprayed across the front of the adjoining building.]]>

POTD: Vegas Abstract #2

Vegas Abstract #2 Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

Although I didn’t call it that, Palm and Pool from earlier this week was the first abstract composition I photographed in Vegas, so this is number two. There were so many varied architectural styles, shapes, and textures it was hard to walk down the street very far without seeing some interesting combination of components to appreciate.]]>

POTD: Norwegian Wood

Norwegian Wood Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

Her sign said “Everything Helps! Street Musician.” What else do you need to know? She was some distance from anything forest-like but she was enjoying playing the ukelele and singing song Norwegian Wood–and doing a pretty good job of it. Here’s a video with the original version of the song and some interesting historical film footage (opening with a clip of a pretty wasted Ringo):

POTD: Down But Not Totally Out

Down But Not Totally Out Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

There were a lot of panhandlers, musicians and performers vying for handouts on the strip in Las Vegas; and then there was this guy who appeared so down and out that he didn’t even bother to post a sign asking for money, or to hide his drink bottle, or to find a more quiet out-of-the-way place to hang out. But then I noticed the Bluetooth headset in his ear which just didn’t seem to fit in. I guess these days staying connected is important to even the truly wasted.

POTD: Mix and Match

Mix and Match Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

The casinos in Vegas attract all sorts of different kinds of folks, although an unusually large number of them seem to be smokers who are quite welcome. I’m not sure why this guy was bothering to smoke outside Harrah’s as I didn’t see one casino in Vegas that was non-smoking–perhaps making them the last bastion of the smoking population. Perhaps the high percentage of smokers in the casinos was because people who think they can beat the odds and win in Vegas also believe they can win the smoking vs. lung cancer lottery.]]>

POTD: Gridlock #15

Gridlock #15 Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

Given all the huge hotels with thousands of rooms, I didn’t really take full advantage of all the opportunities there were in Las Vegas to add to my gridlock series but I did get a few. This particular shot happens to be a parking garage, for Harrah’s if I recall correctly.]]>

POTD: Palm and Pool

Palm and Pool Las Vegas, Nevada 2012

An abstract shot made up of a bit of a building facade, a palm tree trunk, and the edge of a swimming pool as seen from the hotel room  we were staying in up on the twenty-somethingth floor at the Rio Hotel and Casino. I just liked the combination of shapes and textures.]]>

Ecce Opening

Zippy and the Fashion Queen Ecce Fine Art Gallery Bozeman, Montana 2012

Connie and I had a great time at the reception for my Opus Corvus exhibit at the Ecce Gallery at the Emerson Center for Arts and Culture last night. There was a lot going on at the Emerson Center last night besides my opening, a soup and bowl fundraiser for the Center, a new exhibit or two at the Tart Gallery on one side of the Ecce and the 20th anniversary celebration at the coop artists gallery on the other side. So we got to see a lot of friends and meet a number of new folks as well.]]>
