  1. In 1850 you are walking along with your mule and you see the colors in the hills and you know there are minerals to be mined in Death Valley. But wouldn’t you think that a look around you would tell you to move on or go back?

    1. If I thought it was gold that was the source of the color in the hills, I might succumb to the desire to mine. If it was less than that, say borax, I think I’d pass–especially if it was 120 degrees on that day!
