A simple wall shelf and it’s shadow at Maison La Roche, a house in Paris designed by Le Corbusier (one of the pioneers of modern architecture). While this image was converted to black and white the shelf and wall itself where in fact shades of gray as well; so the whole structure creates what appears to be a simple two-dimensional abstract composition.]]>

I always called these things gargoyles, but then just read that it’s more correctly called a grotesque; the term gargoyle being reserved for grotesques that function as rain spouts. Grotesques and gargoyles are traditionally thought to ward off evil and otherwise protect those it guards. We placed this grotesque on a boulder along a trail that runs through the woods up back of our house several years ago. Time has not made it any less grotesque. Given their protective powers, what is this one guarding us against? Well, these days I wished it scared off the spruce bud worms that have been attacking our trees relentlessly. Alas it doesn’t seem to be doing the job as they keep coming back each spring. So far though it seems to be doing a good job preventing forest fires and a host of other maladies we haven’t been visited with (yet).]]>

While the photos from the last two days seemed to at least suggest mutual feelings of aversion, this one is more one sided. The goose is definitely into the woman (or at least her sandwich), but the woman’s definitely not into the goose.]]>

Lot’s of apparent negativity in this photo, although as with yesterday’s photo I believe the couple really was into each other. Based on the way they were behaving both before and after the photo was taken, I’d say they were just caught with misleading looks on their faces that didn’t really have the implications they seem to. While (undoctored) photos technically don’t lie, this is another example of how they can certainly mislead.]]>

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence but you have to wonder what strange, mysterious connection there is between the Saint-Sulpice Catholic church and the robot C3PO from Star Wars. Or, maybe I’ve been too influenced by all the Saint-Sulpice myths generated by the novel The Da Vinci Code.

This is a self-portrait and I have no idea what I could have been carrying that made it look like I was a sailor getting ready to ship out, or maybe just a hobo hauling a big bag of belongings over my shoulder.]]>

A comment by reader Kathy Eyster about the posts from the last two days being good candidates for a diptych got me thinking about pairing this photo with another one by the same name that I posted here last year. It’s a completely different context for comparison, tied together mainly I guess by the name that seemed to fit in both cases. But who said the pairing of images for diptychs had to be so visually obvious.]]>
