  1. What are these “light floats” made of? From this photo it appears that people “walk” or “carry” them almost as if they are the big balloons in the Macy’s Day parade.

    1. I believe they are made of tissue paper over wire frames, and people to carry them rather than inflate them like balloons. That they are carried plus light up of course is why they’re called lanterns rather than floats. I think they are very much modeled after techniques used by the Chinese in their New Year’s parades (sans the lights in many cases).

  2. Congratulations on “getting back in the saddle”. This parade, lanterns and participants, congratulations to them too. A mid winter parade in Bozeman shows that they are no effete hothouse dilettantes. Your images suggest a real trippy atmosphere, looked like fun!

    1. Thanks Steve. Those hothouse dilettantes you speak of would have done o.k. at the parade I think as it was not that cold and there was no snow on the ground. When we first moved to Bozeman 40+ years ago people were already complaining about all the Californians moving here, although not as loud as they (we) complain now. They used to say we just needed one really bad winter to chase all the Californians back to the coast. It didn’t work.
