I wondered if this magpie felt protected or threatened surrounded by all the crows.

Given the brazenness of the magpies around my house, I doubt it felt either of those emotions. At the least, a comrade; at most, looking for a way to get the better of them! Here magpies will come right down on the porch where the cat food is even when the cat is there too! 🙂
Kathy, magpies bring a new meaning to the term attractive nuisance I think. Magpies at our neighbors work in teams. One will pester their dog while the others steal food from her dish, then they switch off roles so everyone gets to eat.
