POTD: Badlands Sunset

2016

There is a trade-off between shooting a scene and actually experiencing it–it’s hard to do both. A lot of photographers (even this one at times) fall into the trap of recognizing and quickly shooting an interesting composition, then moving on without having truly absorbing the experience.

Having seen many beautiful sunsets in my 64 years, I rarely photograph them anymore. It was not a conscious decision; I guess I just decided that this was one sight it’s better to enjoy them than to document.  This shot managed to slip by the “enjoy, don’t shoot” axiom, but I do believe that in this case I did also sit there a while and enjoy the coming of the night.
