Another piece of cardboard in my garage. On this one I’m wondering if that dent in the center right is a distraction or an important component of the composition. I’m leaning toward the distraction conclusion.

I’d say it’s an important component in that it is somewhat of a counterbalance to the brightest vertical stripe. It is the same brightness and similar width. With it’s absence, the straight white edge to the right of it would take on more prominence. Maybe the angled edge of the small white spot is what makes you want to label it a distraction. Other angled edges are more subtle. I notice a slight curved movement in the piece replicating the curve of this parenthesis ). Pretty fascinating to study (or is that pick apart?:)
There’s a fine line between studying and picking an image apart I suppose. 🙂 It doesn’t seem to me you’ve crossed it yet though. I get your point about balance etc. but I’m going to have to say I think I’d like it better if I took out (via the magic of Photoshop)both the dent and the white line to it’s right. In fact I did that, what do you think of this compared to the original? I like it better in part because it causes you to focus more on the bright vertical strip in the upper left–a feature I think is the strength of the image.
Well, you’re right! This is an improvement. Removing the dent brings the total composition to a more vertical emphasis, making the whole thing more dynamic. I had to copy and paste the two images onto a word document to compare them side by side.
Glad you like the change Betty. Sometimes balance (or counterbalance) as you suggested in regard to the first version is a bad thing!
