POTD: Going Green

Going Green
Bozeman, Montana
2021

There’s not much to recommend this image aesthetically but I thought the scene odd so photographed it. I’ve seen ice form on creeks and also green slime but I’ve never seen the green slime so nicely encased in ice. Kind of a strange note to end the 2021 year of POTDs on, but as those with nothing enlightening to say like to say, “it is what it is.”

POTD: So It Begins

So It Begins
Bozeman, Montana
2021

I took this photo back when we were first seeing signs of winter here so it seems out of order given I’ve posted a series of photos from a more recent heavy snowfall. But I wanted to post it nonetheless as it is relevant to our current situation, or at least the accompanying story below.

My Uncle Glenn who lived in Ohio had a school bus that he converted to a camper. Every winter he drove it to Texas to live where it was warm until spring. Once he told my father that if he woke up to find he had to scrape frost off his windshield in Ohio then he knew he’d stayed up north too long. We’re not that adverse to cold weather, but we are on our way to Arizona for the months of January and February of 2022, so I suppose we’re getting there. Our schedule for our travels south is very weather dependent as we prefer not to travel on roads that are too icy or in weather that is too stormy. To the extent this trip entails much of either of those conditions, my uncle’s approach will seem wiser and wiser.

P.S. On the road two days now. Yesterday’s drive made my uncle’s approach seem very wise indeed.

Happy Holidays from Santamingo!

Once Christmas is over, Santamingo will be heading south. We’ll be following him, heading to Arizona for a couple of months. While we’re in transit I’ll be continuing to post images from Montana but soon after we get settled in Tubac where we are staying you’ll see images from the Sonoran Desert for a while.

POTD: Rocky Mountain Portal Tomb

Rocky Mountain Portal Tomb
Bozeman, Montana
2021

Some portal tombs are free-standing and some like this one are built into a hillside. I’ve never seen a portal tomb outside of Ireland and I’ve never seen one this small. Suitable for foxes, coyotes or similar sized animals, this one is right off the road leading to our mountain house. I’ve driven that road for 39 years now and this fall was the first time I ever noticed it. So much for my powers of observation, although to be fair, that section of road is narrow with a drop off so it’s not a real good idea to be gawking around much while negotiating it.
