Although it’s not going to happen for another couple of months, I often find myself thinking about the upcoming total eclipse of the sun. Clouds willing, it will be my first (and likely only) time experiencing the phenomenon. Apparently these figurines at the Guggenheim Museum have been thinking about it too.

POTD: Shadow Art #2

Another photo courtesy of Calder. I see so many interesting shadows of artwork in museums it makes me wonder if that is something that is routinely taken into account when setting up displays. I know they pay special attention to how the actual artwork is illuminated, especially when it comes to accentuating features in 3D works but I don’t know if that care extends to the shadows on the floor and walls as well. I’m pretty sure the shadows of display tables as I’ve captured previously are not considered when setting up an exhibit, yet even those can have an impact (on viewers like me anyway).

Calder likely was not thinking of planetary systems when he built this mobile, but that’s certainly what it made me think of. I was immediately reminded of the orrery that was in the classroom back in my grade school days.

POTD: Spiral Question

You can see all the artwork at the Guggenheim Museum by walking up or down (or both) a long spiral–no steps involved. There is an elevator that can take you to the top of the spiral, stopping four times along the way. So, does the museum have one floor or five? Inquiring minds want to know.
