POTD: Forget-Me-Not #2

POTD: Forget-Me-Not #2Forget-Me-Not #2 Bozeman, Montana 2014

Probably 25 years ago or so, when my parents were out visiting from Kansas one summer,  my mother got enamored with the forget-me-nots and said that if you put flowers in Ivory Soap Flakes it would dry them out nicely and also preserve the color. So we went into town and bought some and she poured them in a shoebox, added a bunch of forget-me-nots and took them home. I don’t know what she did with them, if anything, but a few years back (even before her dementia set in), when I mentioned that incident to her she didn’t remember doing that at all. It’s funny what little events we remember that others who were there do not. While my mother forgot all about the forget-me-nots, I didn’t and every June when they come out in profusion around here they still remind me of her. Especially today which would have been her 88th birthday.]]>

Stopped at a rest area outside Lewistown, the Fashion Queen was reading the history signage while I was inside “resting” when she heard a male voice off to the side say “You want to see something really interesting?” Her first reaction was “that’s not the kind of line you want to hear from some guy hanging around the restrooms at a rest area” but she looked over anyway and saw this guy, Dana Kenneth Johnson, and his giant lizard, Slick, sitting there. More formally, Slick is an Australian Sand Monitor. He’s about five years old, with a life expectancy of 18 or more years. Dana had Slick on a harness (made for a cat) and a leash, and like many a pet owner at a rest area, was hanging around waiting for him to poop.]]>

POTD: Standout

In a large eastern city, Lewistown’s Montana Building might not be particularly noteworthy, but in a small town out west it’s mixed neoclassical and revival architecture is pretty impressive. The Montana Historical Society plaque on the 1916 building agrees, calling it the architectural anchor of the central business district.
