POTD: Broken Bones

This dead tree stump has been laying around so long there’s not much left and what is has separated into two pieces like a bone broken in a very, very, slow-motion accident.]]>

Because of the comments on yesterday’s photo, I thought I’d post a wider view of the same area. The scale of the rocks is more evident here, especially by comparison to the small hunk of sod visible in the upper left hand corner.]]>

I was doing a little landscaping around our house a couple of weeks ago, including putting gravel borders around everything so we don’t have to trim when we mow. At the bottom of the stairs down to our garage, the gravel border sort of melds with some natural rock protruding from the ground. (Our house is built on the side of a rocky limestone ridge and we often end up digging in rock when we excavate or otherwise re-contour the grounds.) I must have had some extra time on my hands that day as I ended up sorting through the gravel picking out appropriately sized round pieces of gravel to line all the cracks in the boulders. It was actually kind of a relaxing, meditative exercise.]]>

A close-up of the photo from yesterday. There are actually tiny light purple and white flowers on the foxtail second one from the right. The other ones are either in the early stages of blooming or are already past their prime, with dried up flowers. (I have no idea if these are true flowers or not, but they certainly are colorful and I don’t know what else to call them.)]]>

POTD: Spent Beauty #1

POTD: Spent Beauty #1Spent beauty #1 Bozeman, Montana 2013

This new series, Spent Beauty, is a spin-off of the Latent Potential series I’ve been working on. When I go out looking for dried grasses and plants that have gone to seed, I keep finding some that don’t have seeds on them but that I like anyway; hence the new collection. This particular type of grass I’ve never seen before. In fact, I didn’t think it was a single plant at first. It looks like some pine needles got stuck on some kind of more common grass stem. But as far as I could tell they are actually part of the plant. Strangely, there was nothing else like it in the area where I found it; nothing that resembled it even if it didn’t have the strange arrangement of  parts. The “needles” or whatever they are seem pretty tightly bound, at least they didn’t come off in the shaking and bumping that occurred in walking with them between where I found them and my studio. How they ended up woven that way must be an interesting story. Too bad I don’t know what it is.]]>
