POTD: Little Landscapes #46

Little Landscapes #46
Bozeman, Montana
2021

I’ve worked on some more little landscapes from mussel shells. Most of them look like seascapes to me, probably because blue is the dominant color and of course because the mussel shells came from the ocean. In this one I see a big, curling wave forming on the left with clouds in the upper right.

POTD: Faux Fireworks

Faux Fireworks
Bozeman, Montana
2021

This is not a photo of fireworks at all, but on Independence Day it is perhaps easy to pretend it is. It’s actually an example of what you get when you set the camera shutter speed to 30 seconds and then accidentally trip the shutter while you are moving the camera around while setting it up to photograph a full moon. This method of photographing fireworks has it’s advantages as it comes with no increased fire risk, something everyone in the drought-stricken west is hopefully thinking about today.

POTD: Lamb’s Ears

Lamb’s Ears

Lamb’s ears aren’t native to Montana but sure grow well on our property, even in the hot, dry weather we’ve been having. Or maybe it’s actually because it’s been hot and dry as I read they are
“superb for growing in drought-like conditions” and even love poor soil, which we also have no shortage of in certain areas.

POTD: Not a Desert Yet

Not a Desert Yet

Even though we’re seeing a disturbing drying trend along with high heat as I mentioned yesterday, we still have various varieties wildflowers over much of our property. I think the mix and the timing of the blooms is changing along with the climate over time, but there’s still plenty to appreciate. For now anyway.

Spent Beauty #48

This is a lovely yet disturbing image. It is a photo of a balsamroot leaf taken just the other day. Normally the balsamroot and several other wildflower varieties that grow on our land are in peak form in mid-June. This year however the heat and lack of rain is causing them to shrivel up and die much earlier than normal, a continuation of a very troubling trend we’ve been observing over a number of years now. Climate change is having some noticeable effects here I think. We may dry out and burn up but at least we don’t have to worry about seawater bubbling up through our streets and roads like it’s been doing in Key West, Florida lately.

POTD: Three Small Totems

Three Small Totems
Bozeman, Montana
2021

Just some souvenirs acquired while wandering around the American Prairie Reserve earlier this month. I don’t know anything about the feather or rock, but the skull is presumably that of a prairie dog as I found it next to a prairie dog burrow.
