The low afternoon sun raking across this cliff surface imparts a glow to a ribbon-like ledge on the rock face.

The Walls Have Eyes
Sand Island Campground, Utah
2021
Without too much trouble, I can see a partially finished sculpture of a raven carved into this wall. The bird’s beak is pointing to the right his eye and eyelid are on the left. The smaller hole on the right? Well, that’s actually just a piece of food he has clamped in his beak.

Approaching Magnificent
Tucson, Arizona
2022
There is definitely more to read on the walls of the Crossroads restaurant in Tucson while waiting in line for the men’s room than when I used to go there back in the 70s. But there was no covid back then, which meant I could feel comfortable eating inside in the dining area instead of getting an order to go. All in all I prefer the 70s.

Get in Line
Bozeman, Montana
2022
We’ve been trying to attract songbirds to the feeder at our house in town for several years now. We have not had much success due to the newness of the subdivision which means not enough mature landscaping to satisfy their needs. We’re seeing more promising results this spring, with chickadees and finches showing up, perhaps just on their way to their favorite nesting grounds but maybe the surroundings here are finally starting to impress them. Still it’s the regulars, the magpies and crows, who are our most frequent visitors. Sometimes there are so many the line for food gets quite long. On this snowy day last week, the wait was not bad at all.

Patriot’s Dream #72

I came across this squirrel dragging a small flag down the road in the local cemetery. I followed him for a hundred yards or so before he scampered off the road and posed long enough for me to get a few shots of him.

Tired of It
Bozeman, Montana
2022
This whole area of Montana (and beyond) is still under extreme drought conditions and the snow pack in the mountains is quite low for this time of year. So I’m glad for all the additional precipitation we’ve been getting. But really, it’s late April so I’d much rather see it come in a clear rather than white version. (It can come down as snow all it wants up in the mountains, but down here in the valleys it’s high time for a change.) I can’t help but think these crows feel the same way.
