Smoke Horizon

During the recent inundation of forest fire smoke (mostly coming from west of Montana) we were lucky to have even this much of a view of the mountains around here. This particular shot was taken right after sunrise and the color created a rather lovely minimalist landscape. It didn’t take long that day however, for it to turn into the same old dull smokey gray color we saw way too much of. Fortunately, most of the smoke cleared out a week or so ago so we’re back to enjoying more typical Montana skies.

Still the Same

Driving through Livingston, Montana recently I was struck by the realization that this particular view of the main drag, Park Street, hasn’t changed appreciably in the 30-plus years we’ve lived in Montana. That’s a rarity is this fast (too fast) growing part of the country.

Accidental Geoglyph

Part of the process of working on my summer project of building a rock retaining wall involved excavating suitable rocks out of the hillside back behind our house with my tractor and backhoe. The rocks were mixed in with the dirt in the hillside. They often came out quite easily but sometimes when they were tightly packed together, they needed some persuasion. A lot of the more stubborn rocks were marked with scratches from the backhoe teeth but this one struck me as particularly interesting due to how straight the lines were and that they were at nearly a right angle to one another. Unlike the others with quite random marks, it looks like a purposefully created geoglyph.

Summer Projects

I’ve done a lot of things this summer from attending five art shows to hiking and some travel as well. But pound for pound (literally) this has to be my most significant summer project this year.
After digging back the hillside from our garage in late spring and early summer, I started collecting rocks from an area down behind the garage and stacking them up to form this wall. With the exception of digging the rocks out of the hill behind the garage (which I did with my tractor and backhoe), all the work was done by hand, with each rock being moved several times in the process of getting them into place. The wall is about 30 feet long and 12 feet tall at it’s tallest point. Doing some rough calculations to figure out how much weight I’d actually lifted in the project I came up with the answer “a whole heck of a lot.”
This version of the wall is much better engineered than last year’s failure so I’m hoping I’ll have to find some other way to stay in shape next summer!
