I’ve got a few more images to post from the ranch rodeo we attended last month. As I’ve mentioned before, contestants in this ranch rodeo had to be working ranch hands on a ranch running at least 200 head of cattle. They are not professional rodeo cowboys like you generally see at a rodeo, but they’re damn good at what they do.

This is obviously not a recent photo–it’s from last January. The name was chosen not only for the haircut this juvenile bison is sporting but also because Butch was the name of my high school’s (stuffed) buffalo mascot.
Feel the Burn

It’s fire season in the west, but we’ve been pretty lucky in southwest Montana until recently. A fire about 30 miles from our house, combined with all those further upwind have filled the skies the last few days. Even inside the house it smells like a campfire at times, and the Bridger Mountains which we can usually see quite clearly in this view from our house are all but invisible in this photo. Temperatures are actually quite mild, yet the presence of the smoke makes the weather feel oppressive. Stunning red sunsets and sunrises don’t quite make up for it. Still we’re thankful that all we have to deal with is the smoke–for now anyway.
