On our way down from the bell tower at the courthouse in Lewistown, we stopped off in an attic and got a look all the old records dating back to the 1800s in the early days of Fergus County. Some of the documents were more organized than others.

This gear and arm was almost constantly in motion, making it challenging to get a photo of it that was not blurred due to the shutter speed required to get a properly exposed image in the dim light of the clock tower. Fortunately they paused momentarily when the arm was at it apex, giving me just enough time to get the job done. (For the geek inclined camera buffs out there, I used a shutter speed of 1/8s and an ISO speed of 12,800. I must admit that the shutter speed was also limited by my refusing to shoot with a tripod in most situations. Thank goodness for image stabilization and a reasonably steady hand!)

This clock on the inside of the courthouse bell-tower is supposed to show the time on the four outside clocks visible from around town. But, due to lack of parts, things weren’t quite working properly. While the clock mechanism was merrily chugging away, all five clocks showed different times.

When we were in Lewistown for the opening of my exhibit at the art center there last month, we got a personalized tour of the clock tower in the county courthouse. The view over the city from the catwalk surrounding the outside of the clock tower was impressive, but it was the clock innards that attracted my camera. This is a view looking out through one of the four translucent clock faces.
