I found these two halves of a piece of broken gravel in the gravel border around our house. Besides the surprise of finding two halves of the same rock within a short distance (12″?) of each other amid all the other random gravel pieces, I was taken by the way the cross sections of the swirls of material within the rock s mimic leaves of grass or other plants. These swirls carry all the way through the rock but on the outside they just look like rock swirls, taking no obvious shape. I guess I could have called this post Faux Fossils because they are reminiscent of the botanical fossils that are abundant in certain places.
I like both the design and the colors in this photo. It’s the dark lines acting like “veins” that provide an outline to interpret the color as a leaf. I too thought of botanical fossils.
Thanks Kathy. I thought the dark lines looked like plant stems (rather than veins you saw) and the larger dark areas looked like leaves on those plant stems. Given that interpretation, I thought the color orangish color more of a distraction than anything else. Which is another example of how everyone can have a different interpretation of a photograph and what the photographer thinks the meaning is doesn’t necessarily match that of the viewer! If you happen to have read or are currently reading like I am Guy Tal’s Be Extraordinary book, he has a quite interesting discussion of this aspect of art.
Thanks for the recommendation of Guy Tal’s book. He is a modern photo philosopher!
You’re welcome. I can really relate to much of what he writes about. And his knowledge and recall of all he’s read over the years is pretty amazing.
