Surprisingly Chimney Rock isn’t particularly visible (if at all) from outside the badlands area and no one in their right mind would try and take a wagon or whatever through the badlands when there is a very easy route along the Yellowstone River just to the south. Interestingly though there is a butte towards the edge of the badlands that is visible from a ways away and is reasonably accessible. Some of Custer’s men climbed the butte and carved their initials in the rocks there shortly before their demise on the Little Bighorn River.

That’s quite a landmark! I wonder if it served as a marker for pioneers heading west by conestoga wagon (and other means).
