Death Valley is big; big in size (the largest national park outside of Alaska), big in elevation change (over 11,000′ from the highest point to the lowest), and big in views (with that much elevation change and no trees to block the view you can see forever). But it is also very small and intimate as can be seen in this photo. I actually had to crawl under a pile of boulders that blocked the route into this narrow slot canyon.

Picking your way among the rocks and beaches between tide pools, you spend most of your time looking down to see where you are stepping. Not only does the ensure good footing but as a bonus it also points you towards some nice close-up photography opportunities.

Walking on the beach in Morro Bay where I’ve escaped for a couple of days of R&R after experiencing yet again why Fresno is not major California tourist destination, I was surprised by the sense of motion imparted by this very stationary scene.
