On our way down from the bell tower at the courthouse in Lewistown, we stopped off in an attic and got a look all the old records dating back to the 1800s in the early days of Fergus County. Some of the documents were more organized than others.
WOW! What a treasure trove of history! And to think they are just stored higgley-piggley in an attic!! I shudder to think of all that going up in smoke!
I had the same thought of the risk of fire. That whole upper part of the courthouse inside the bell tower was all exposed wood and seemed looked like a lot of tinder ready to burn. Interestingly enough, while we were standing on the on the narrow catwalk that went around the clock faces outside the tower (where we could see all over town) we happened to see a large smoke plume develop from a house fire that had just started a couple of blocks away.
