Cowgirls and Indians #8
Topical note on the series. The “National” Gathering of the Nations at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque NM, the largest “PowWow” in the country needs a new venue. After two years of negotiations, the university and event leaders were unable to come to financial terms. The university claims that after expenses they lost $2500 each year for the last two years. Coincidentally, the university remarked it hosts a rodeo that makes several hundred thousand dollars during the same season.
Apparently more people are willing to pay to watch a rider fall off a bull than dancing and drumming. Actually while the rodeo that I took these photos at charged admission (although not during the event I photographed), the powwow was completely free.
