Another cold weather battle, this time amongst the crows who typically fight more than the magpies from what I’ve seen. Interestingly I’ve seen no battles involving a crow and a magpie. I think that may be because the magpies tend to scoot off giving way to the crows whenever they approach. They must have some inkling as to how a fight between them would turn out.]]>

Artistic Vision

dMax (basically how dark the blacks are)–all important aspects of vision but especially for a photographer. The very noticeable improvement in my optical vision have made me wonder if it will induce any effect on my artistic vision. Picking up some of my existing prints I have sitting around they look, well, better. Just like everything else they are sharper, brighter and have more dMax. But the big question is will the noticeable change in the way I’m seeing produce any noticeable changes in what I photograph and how I process the results to create the final images. My guess is no, changing my ocular vision isn’t going to change my artistic vision. Let me know if you notice evidence to the contrary!  ]]>

Last winter snow we got in town didn’t seem to last too long before it melted at least partially, leaving an ugly dirty snow look for weeks at a time. I don’t know what this winter holds, but the current snow seems safe for now as it was five below zero last night. The rose hips will stay well preserved too.]]>

POTD: Big Damn Country

Big Damn Country Big Timber, Montana 2012

Back in the last century when I first knew the Fashion Queen and before she became Dr. Fashion Queen I went to her baccalaureate graduation ceremony. Other than there only being about 30 people in her graduating class at Alaska Pacific University, about the only thing I remember from that occasion was the story the keynote speaker told. Actually I only remember the punch line not the entire plot which had something to do with Teddy Roosevelt and a friend who liked to get out and ride around in the expanses of the American West. But it was entertaining and the punch line was a quote attributed to Teddy Roosevelt when he and his friend rode up to the brow of a hill overlooking a vast scene. Reacting to the view, Teddy said “Big damn country” to which his friend replied “Good to get out.” Every since then, whenever I come over the brow of a hill while out driving around and am confronted by a scene such as this view of the Crazy Mountains near Big Timber, I will say to myself or the Fashion Queen if she is with me “Big Damn Country” to which she will reply “Good to get out.” How’s that for the lasting benefits of a college education.]]>

POTD: Heading South

Heading South Bozeman, Montana 2012

I don’t think crows are big winter migrators and I don’t know which direction this guy was heading, but if he was thinking of a warmer climate now would be a good time to head that way. We’ve got a bunch of snow on the ground and sub-zero temps predicted for tomorrow night. The skiers are loving the new snow, but I don’t think corvids ski much. I like because the snow because the birds really stand out against the all white background.]]>
