I’m a sucker for the elegant simplicity of art deco architectural details, of which the Hoover dam abounds. In this case the neatly arranged bench and custodial accoutrements see well placed to add some interesting accents to accompany the understated exit door. (And the piece of trash under the bench adds some tension to the otherwise very orderly scene.)

How Low Can You Go?

The normal water level in Lake Mead behind Hoover Dam is near the very top of this image of one of the intake towers for the dam’s power plant. That’s nearly 200 feet above the water level when this photo was taken.

Ceiling View

The ramada at Miller Point was built in the 30s by the CCC to provide a shaded viewpoint of Cathedral Gorge below. The view down into the gorge was certainly nice but the view straight up had its own appeal as well.

Going Large

Much larger views of the area than this are of course available at Cathedral Gorge. But for me, this is about as wide as my image coverage gets. Unlike yesterday’s image, taken up close in the same area, this one does not brink the word luscious to mind. But the lighting certainly is dramatic and really sets off the detail in the formations nicely.

I’m going to end this series from Cathedral Gorge with a couple of black and white images. The shapes and forms, tonality, and soft but dramatic lighting in this one make me think I should have named it Luscious Landscape.
