A Clear and Present Danger

I know that wind turbines pose a threat to unwary birds flying by (through) them. I also know that in this particular location the wind turbines are surrounded by many grain fields  that the snow geese regularly fly to to feed. However, watching the bird coming back to the lake from the fields in the evening, it appeared to me that they were quite adept at steering well clear of the danger zone.

The official census said there were some 12,000 snow geese at Freeeout Lake the day I took this photo. This shows about 2/3 of the only bunch we saw. I didn’t try to estimate the numbers here but it seems well short of 12,000.

Knuckle Ridge

I was taken by the consistent, knuckle-like shadows along this smooth-topped ridge. It’s hard to see the gullies eroded into the ridge that are responsible for the shadow’s shape.

Squiggles

A more structured and more stable version of the moving, squiggly shapes I get in my eyes once in a while. I believe they are often called visual or ocular migraines. Mine always used to precede a bad headache (although not the crazy bad migraines people get thank goodness). But thankfully, in recent years I get the visual distortion and it goes away without any headache occurring.
