Time After Time
Death Valley, California
2021
Given how little rainfall Death Valley receives each year, I am continually dumbfounded by the degree of intricate erosion to be found in places like Ubehebe Crater, one wall of which is shown here. Every little bit adds up I guess, especially after 2,000-7,000 years, the estimated age of this crater.
I can not remember what year it was I was last in Death Valley, but the road to Ubehebe Crater was closed because of flooding.
Perhaps it was the same year Scotty’s Castle got flooded? I think you can still see where the dirt and rocks spread across the Ubehebe road were pushed aside when the road was opened again.
It doesn’t take a lot of rain to cause bad flooding and wiping out of roads in Death Valley. Flash-floods are scary; I remember a little of an incident when I may have been 7 or 8 years old, my Dad was driving us across Utah when out of nowhere came a flash-flood sweeping a big-rig off the highway in front of us. Scary day for a little kid.
Now that must have been something to see! Maybe best at an older age though I suppose–to cut down on the trauma.
