POTD: Day as Night #2

Day as Night #2
Bozeman, Montana
2017

This one combines a photo of a mountain lion at night from the trailcam at our house with an eclipse photo. The night-time photos from the trailcam are monochrome and of poor quality. Hence the heavy use of Photoshop filters to dress it up. I think this composite photo perhaps has some merit (as an illustration, not a photograph) but it could use a lot more work. But I thought I’d post this intermediate version while I let it simmer in my mind for a while before trying to work on it again.

  1. I have several photography friends that love digital photography because they can make a dozen or more pictures in an afternoon. I think there work is nice, no more than that. For myself I am like you I like to let things simmer. I was working on one yesterday that has simmered for 3 years.I try to make photographs not pictures.

I find your Day as Night #2 very intriguing.

    1. Thanks Alan. “Simmering” always helps I think, even if it is just to confirm that you were right in thinking that something you did quickly in fact came out really well (as a photograph not a picture to use your terminology). In my own personal experience, some of my best images were in fact quickly taken and quickly processed, but most take more time to get right, particularly on the processing end. And after a week or two of simmering, I occasionally, or maybe often, change my mind on both the quick takes and the ones that took more time.
