POTD: Kitchen Abstract

Another in-home found composition. I’m not sure what I was doing when I noticed this; most likely I was just standing there staring at my feet or something equally productive. But I have to wonder by what process my mind uses to go from an aimless glance at something I see every day to thinking there’s a photo opportunity there.

  1. Larry the subtle lines in the shadows of this image are crucial to its success. As for what happens in your mind that makes the ordinary into photos….I think it’s immersion in the process itself. Eventually that “translation” of the physical world into photographs becomes almost a reflex. By which I do NOT mean to take anything away from your skills, talents or efforts. I think it’s the result of constantly exercising your photographic “muscles.” And in noticing the effect of light on your subjects. Both this and the still life you posted earlier are about the light as much as anything. And light is constantly changing. I’m especially aware of it lately as we get more sunny days after the winter’s clouds.

    1. Kathy, thanks for putting a better interpretation to my “blank stare” process. “Constantly exercising your photographic muscles” actually makes me sound like I know what I’m doing! 🙂

  2. Fess up. I have taken many pictures like that, some with my shoes in them, when I think I’m turning on the camera.

    1. Well Steve I can’t say that hasn’t ever happened to me but it was not the case this time. Perhaps I should hire an expert to analyze the photo to prove that I did not Photoshop out my shoes! 🙂
