POTD: Patriot’s Dream #8

Patriot’s Dream #8
Bozeman, Montana
2011

This is one of those rare times when I feel the use of my least favorite word, juxtaposition, is warranted. If you’re not quite sure what phlebotomy means you can look it up but let’s just say the relevant part of the definition has to do with blood-letting.

  1. I did have to look it up. Hopefully it doesn’t have to do with you. At least not in a negative way. Congrats on your new appearance in LensWork! Looking forward to getting my copy.

  2. Because of your Patriot’s Dream project, I’m noticing flags in unexpected places too! 🙂 Saw one the other day & thought of your collection. Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Thanks Kathy. There’s going to be an exhibition of my flag photos at the Emerson Center for Arts and Culture here in Bozeman in 2012. (Also an open subject juried photography exhibit for which I will be the juror. Hope you’ll submit something when the time comes.)

  3. Larry,

I appreciate the irony in your photo. I guess you called it juxtaposition. Two “radical” and “left-wing” quotes I’ve picked up recently are:

Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons.
    Bertrand Russell (1872 – 1970)

Patriotism is often an arbitrary veneration of real estate above principles.
    George Jean Nathan (1882 – 1958)

Seems too often that what is call for in being patriotic is the letting of blood (ours and others), and to challenge this notion is to be called a coward (and of course, unpatriotic). If this is what happens to me because of my post, I guess I’ll just have to try to manage the consequences.

    1. Thanks for your comments Jeffery. I try not to use the POTD for my very own political soapbox, because I want to focus on art. But with the Patriot’s Dream series, I guess I’m walking a fine line in that regard–although a lot of them could be interpreted in various political ways so maybe it’s o.k. In regard to this particular photo, I’ll just say your intepretation is spot on with my intent.
