Returning from Wisconsin recently, we spent a couple of days at Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Given its iconic stature, it has been photographed a bazillion times (or more) over the years, so I wasn’t expecting to get any standout images of it. But I did get a couple I like. This one is my favorite simply because I happened to look up and see it just as this cloud was drifting by, making it look like it was on fire. Had I looked up any earlier or later I would have missed the composition, making it sort of a decisive moment of the natural landscape rather than human variety (if you’re familiar with Cartier-Bresson’s nomenclature and book).

This image just shouted “show me in color.” I think the filtered sunlight on the mushrooms had something to do with that.

An elderly couple picked these three mushrooms and just laid them out on a tree stump for some reason. I figured a squirrel would get to them eventually, but the mushroom hunter we talked to added them to his collection. They should make for a good meal as the largest one is maybe 8″ long.
