POTD: I Get Around

I Get Around
Bozeman, Montana
2020

I found this skull in a pasture on a friend’s farm in western Kansas back in the early 70s and have kept it ever since. It made the move with me to Arizona, then to Alaska, finally settling here in Montana for the last 38 years. Like me, I doubt it will move again. That suits the house finches who nest inside it every year just fine. I’d like to find it a companion (besides the finches) for it in the form of a buffalo skull but so far have not visited the right pasture for that kind of find.

POTD: Last Light

Back in the 80s sometime, I built this shed in a couple of days from a pile of used lumber, doors and windows I had acquired somewhere. It was way before we built the garage and separate workshop we have now so it came in quite handy for storage of tools etc. Now it serves mainly to hold garden tools and the like as well as a repository for various “important” souvenirs we’ve collected over the years. It’s also a good place for an occasional stint of porchin’ and of course a photo subject. The last time we had our house painted the painter asked if we wanted the shed painted as well or did we want to leave it in it’s rustic state. I guess he thought it had a lot of character. We opted not to repaint it and it has been steadily acquiring more rusticity ever since.

POTD: Democracy Chained

Democracy Chained
Wichita, Kansas
2003

This image actually appeared as a POTD back in it’s early days in 2003 when there were but a handful of people accessing it. But it has been coming to mind lately as I read about all the efforts to stifle voting in the upcoming national election. Voting rights are or should be sacred in this country and what is happening right now is a scary omen of what may be to come. Folks, this is no way to run a democracy!

POTD: Still Life With Socks

Still Life With Socks
Bozeman, Montana
2020

Waiting out the dog days of summer at our cabin outside of Bozeman. We’ve had the place so long the place is stating to take on a vintage look. Note the boombox circa 1987 on the shelves and the slightly more recent VCR player above it–all the civilization you need. Well, those two things, the LCD TV, internet access (however poor) and a few other things and it’s all you need.

POTD: No Macro Lens No Problem

No Macro Lens No Problem

I’m still messing around with my new scanner. The resolution is quite amazing, allowing close-ups that would make many macro lens envious. This is a photo  of a decaying aspen leaf and the vertical dimension of the photo covers less than half an inch of the leaf. It shows details that at least my old eyes cannot visually distinguish.

POTD: Dishwasher Discovery

Dishwasher Discovery

I ordered a new scanner recently with the intent to scan hundreds of slides that have been sitting in a box in the attic for decades. So did I jump right into that task as soon as it arrived? No of course not. Instead, I decided to see what else I could scan with it, you know, fun things like this mouse skeleton I found last spring under the dishwasher at our cabin when I was hooking it up after having drained it for the winter last November.
