They are in the same family, corvidae. The crows always win because they’re just plain more aggressive I think. They are also bigger but I’m not sure how much that comes into play because I’ve seen how smaller birds can easily chase other bigger birds away from their nesting area. The crows we’ve seen at our bird feeder don’t every actually fight the magpies, they just show up and the magpies just back off for a bit. I have, on occassion, seen a crow eating from one side of the feeder and a magpie sneaking up on the other side and grabbing something quick, before the crow can react.
