POTD: A Few of the Many

A Few of the Many
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
2026

We drove to Yellowstone and over through Lamar Valley yesterday. Along the way we saw probably well more than 1,000 bison. Every new view along the drive seemed to contain a small to medium sized herd (generally less than 100). These smaller groupings  went on for miles. One day I hope to come across a view of 1,000+ bison all in one single view. Until then I’ll just have to photograph a sampling of the population.

    1. Thanks Carol! Even though there are typically five to six thousand bison in Yellowstone at any one time it would take a big bison family reunion to get 1,000 in one place. But still what we saw was an impressive density compared to what we usually see.

With a little help from AI you could probably conjure up a herd of 1,000 bison.

Thank you for referring to them as bison. I am so tired of hearing them called “buffalo.” Maybe a few billboards along the highways leading to Yellowstone with pictures. ‘This is a buffalo” and ” This is a bison “.

    1. Creating and image of 1,000 bison might be cool but actually seeing them with the naked eye, that would be way cool.

You are clearly taking a naturalist’s view of the terminology regarding bison vs buffalo. But there are also cultural considerations that should be taken into account. Ken Burns touches on the subject
      here.

And more emphasis on the cultural issues can be found here. To a large degree I'm fine with using either word. And I'm sure that Buffalo, Wyoming is not interested in changing it's name, nor is there any effort to change Bill Cody's nickname to Bison Bill. I find it interesting that there's a bar in Miles City called the Bison Bar.
