Home Ground #32

My grandparents old radio. I’ve owned it for about 40 years, about how long they had it after buying it new in the 1930s. It was not in working order when I got it but I finally had it’s electronics reworked. As a kid I used to listen to all sorts of exotic (to me) AM radio stations as well as the occasional short-wave broadcast. There’s not much in the way of good AM stations any more and short-wave has all but disappeared thanks to the internet. But I had a Bluetooth receiver added to it so now can play music off my phone or computer and enjoy the mellow sounds the old tube system produces. The Fashion Queen says we should only play music from the 30s and 40s given the vintage of the radio. Music from those decades does seem to sound best suited for this equipment.
Visually, there is nothing in the picture that hints of the 21st century instead of the early 20th. That makes the whole image exude nostalgia! I especially like how the pocket watch with its round analog face mimics the round analog dial on the radio. I still mentally “convert” digital time to a visual of a clock face. Nice!
Thanks Kathy. Our mountain house has turned out to be a bit of an homage to nostalgia I guess. That’s probably why I feel so comfortable there. Our house in town is quite the opposite–very modern.
We had a similar but not so fancy looking big radio in the living room when i was passing through the preteen years, and would sit in front of it listening to The Lone Ranger, and Superman and Jack benny and Ozzie and Harriet and baseball games, and…
Occasionally I would be given permission to leave the Sunday dinner table to go to listen to something on the radio.
Thanks for prompting the memory, with the photo.

ps I like the photos you post regularly.
You’re very welcome Garet. Glad I could spawn some good memories for you.
I wonder what objects will invoke nostalgia for Gen Z, X, et al in the future….
Perhaps almost nothing? I keep reading about how they are eschewing material things compared to us old folks.
