POTD: Vishis

Vishis
Hayden, Arizona
2022

I somehow overlooked this lovely gem when I took it almost two years ago. The sign certainly gets the point across in spite of the poor spelling, and I don’t think I’d want to argue the fine points of the written English language with the owner–or his dogs.

POTD: Buffalo Man

Initially I was pretty surprised and impressed by the modern looking design on this pictograph, but quickly realized those are bullet holes in the figure. I take a very dim view of anyone who would think it o.k. to target shoot at antiquities like this. And those who add their initials or other graffiti of their own design to such figures don’t fare much better in my mind, other than they weren’t using guns to express themselves. But if they insist on leaving their marks, they should do it somewhere else in the vicinity (preferably far away) rather than on top of them. Who know in a few centuries or millennia, their graffiti might actually earn historic respect rather than disdain. It’s a long shot but it’s about the only chance at a positive legacy many folks have I suppose.

POTD: The Usual Suspects #3

The Usual Suspects #3
San Rafael Swell, Utah
2023

After 20 years plus of POTD posts, you have to forgive me for reusing certain titles, often for unrelated images, something that I try not to do. I realized after naming this one that I’d actually used the same name only recently, so I probably shouldn’t have recycled it again so soon. But the first time (that I remember anyway) using it was way back in 2017 so on average (says the statistician) they’re spaced pretty far apart. In this case, the usual suspects are a lineup of very nicely preserved pictographs.

POTD: Seeing Things–The Acolyte

Seeing Things–The Acolyte
San Rafael Swell, Utah
2023

It seems that, especially recently, I post images of creatures or people I see in rocks, trees, whatever. It’s kind of like seeing shapes in in clouds I guess. Anyway, as a result, I’ve decided to create a named series of images appropriately titled Seeing Things.

The wall of this cave or alcove we were in contained a long band of highly stained rock in which the Fashion Queen claimed she could see images from the Stations of the Cross. I couldn’t see them but then she’s the one who was raised Catholic, not me. I could however make out this dark-hooded, robed figure holding what I imagined to be a long-handled candle lighter. Perhaps I saw that because a young kid in the far past I participated in lighting candles in the Presbyterian Church my folks took us to. In my case though the robes I wore were white and not hooded, but close enough. Either that or its a kid wearing a hooding holding a fishing rod.
