Tipi poles mark the locations of the Nez Perce lodges at the start of the Battle of the Big Hole, the largest conflict between the U.S. Calvary and Chief Joseph’s people while they were attempting to flee to Canada in 1877.
This is a haunting image for me…and not the Halloween kind. They seem to represent all the Nez Pierce who died on that arduous journey to defeat. 🙁
Yes, it is a haunting reminder of that history. It would have been much more depressing to be there had it not been a beautiful sunny day when I was there.
