It started as a relatively straight-forward day-time close-up shot of a buffalo, with a bit of side lighting. I used artistic license and some relatively easy Photoshop adjustments to go full-on chiaroscuro (à la Caravaggio) to create the dramatic portrait.

Where did you take it? you are very close!
It was along the road in Yellowstone. I was maybe 20 feet away–safe in the car using a telephoto lens.
Well, it is a great shot. It really captures the depth of that gaze
