The scarecrow at Hubbell prepares to guard it’s fallow garden plot from things that go bump in the night. Given the construction of the scarecrow, an obvious name for this photo came to mind, but I did not use it as I believe it would be considered a derogatory term to many (although it was used as the title for a novel and a subsequent indie movie).  ]]>

I really enjoyed the mostly warm fall weather on my artist residency in Arizona, but this snowstorm (which didn’t really amount to much) that came through one day was a reminder to me of what I had waiting for me back in Montana, e.g., the six inches or so we’ve received since yesterday. The first evening of my stay at Hubbell Trading Post, I got to thinking about the hogan I was staying, in particular how authentic it was or was not in various aspects. I knew the doors of hogans traditionally face east, where the gods assemble at dawn. But my sense of direction made me think my hogan did not do that. The next morning just after sunrise, I noticed a patch of sunshine on the wall opposite the door. Looking at the door, sure enough there was the sun streaming in through the window, resolving both the authenticity issue as well as recalibrating my sense of direction and providing the first of many photos I took that day.]]>
