I was never a Devo fan, but I always found their outfits, and this album cover mildly entertaining.  They may indeed be men but neither this hat or the flower pot hats they were know for in the day project any kind of manly-man image; not that there is anything wrong with that.

I’m not sure why I thought this was photo-worthy when I took it and I’m not sure why it is noteworthy now either; maybe it’s because I figured it was as close as I’ll get to being featured in a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition.

I just saw the Elvis Presley movie Jailhouse Rock on TV a couple of weeks ago. My favorite scene from the movie was when Vince Everett (Elvis) kisses Peggy Van Alden and she objects, saying “How dare you think such cheap tactics would work with me!” Vince replies “That ain’t tactics, honey. It’s just the beast in me.”

Here’s a video of the title song from the movie. The original movie was in black and white and while I don’t generally like colorization, I found this video oddly more interesting in color.

Way back when I used to occasionally play the original version of the Trivial Pursuit game. After playing the game for a while, one strategy I came up with for guessing when I didn’t know the answer to a question was to guess John Kennedy if it was a question about a man and Marilyn Monroe if the question was about a woman. That didn’t always work, but there were so many questions about those two in the game it certainly improved the odds. That same obsession with these icons of history carries over to antique stores too. (Recall John Kennedy in the background of Model Citizens #1).

The mannequin population of this antique store was primarily female, making it a good place I suppose for a rugged outdoorsy guy like Mr. Sam here to get a date.

The red fruit hanging on the wall in the background makes this mannequin look like she’s got some sort of an understated Carmen Miranda thing going on.

I hardly ever even notice mannequins in department or clothing store windows. In that sterile context they seem like nothing more than the plastic people that they really are. But placed in amongst the paraphernalia of a “junque” store they seem more life-like, like they could be a model of a real person with an interesting story to tell.
