I took this photo right around Halloween so I assumed the spruce tree had decided to go trick or treating as a birch tree. The costume is only partly convincing. (It’s actually a birch stump nestled into the branches of the spruce.)

LensWork magazine. LensWork is generally considered to be the best publication in the photography business by people like me, i.e., followers of what you might call the old school of photography (no post-modern crap allowed). Well, the distant future turned out to be only six months away; by the end of the year I had two separate portfolios accepted at the same time. I’m still not sure where I got the gumption to submit not just one but two portfolios at the same time. That was great, but the rather immediate success left me wondering what to shoot for next. I’m still miles away from that offer of a solo exhibit at MOMA.  (A guy can dream can’t he?) So I’ve continued to submit to LensWork on occasion. I’m pleased to announce that they have just accepted my sixth portfolio, which will appear in the January/February issue. I am just really lucky that Brooks Jensen (the editor) and company are apparently dialed into an aesthetic quite similar to my own, and I thank them for giving me so much press space over the last seven years. In the Thick of It Bozeman, Montana 2014

This is an interesting image not only visually (I hope anyway) but also technically. It is a color image yet looks very monochrome; but when I converted it to a monochrome image, it looked considerably flatter and less interesting. The subtle off-white shade of the bark on the aspen trees is unsubtle enough to have a considerable impact on the look of the image.]]>

Eighteen holes and no waiting when you play night golf, in the dark, in a snowstorm. There weren’t many takers on that opportunity, although I did see seven deer playing through.]]>

This cottonwood tree on one of my daily walking routes never fails to draw my attention. I’m not sure why it does so, and I’m not sure that it’s new winter coat or this image of it provides any real clues to the attraction either. It’s a nice tree, but why does it stand out more than any of the other similar trees I pass by?]]>

This sculpture outside the Bozeman Public Library does not have a posted title, so I named it after what it reminded me of: the kinds of smoke trails the Blue Angles leave when flying. ]]>
