  1. There was also a romantic trend of sorts of about that same period(?) in which well-off folks were building follies on their estates (buildings built for decorative rather than functional purposes) that looked like ruins.

  3. I’ve always assumed they had glass of some sort in them, but who knows? (Well, someone does, but it is not me!)
