On closer look, it does indeed appear as if the tree was sawn off at the top, and I can’t think of any other reason than to provide a better nesting space for osprey. The use of a tree rather than sticking a pole in the ground looks more natural and cheaper as well–as long as it wasn’t too difficult to get up the tree to do the cutting.
It almost looks like the tree had been “topped” to create a nice wide area for the ospreys to build their nest…
I wonder if in fact the tree was topped specifically for that purpose, or if a strong wind did it for them.
Well, the tree is in a Wyoming Wildlife Management unit, priority is for Wildlife.
