There looked to be some capstone covering parts of the sand dunes in Death Valley. But it consisted of very porous and fragile sandstone and seemed to be quickly disintegrating, becoming  just more loose sand to be blown around by the wind.

POTD: Clockworks #4

This gear and arm was almost constantly in motion, making it challenging to get a photo of it that was not blurred due to the shutter speed required to get a properly exposed image in the dim light of the clock tower. Fortunately they paused momentarily when the arm was at it apex, giving me just enough time to get the job done. (For the geek inclined camera buffs out there, I used a shutter speed of 1/8s and an ISO speed of 12,800. I must admit that the shutter speed was also limited by my refusing to shoot with a tripod in most situations. Thank goodness for image stabilization and a reasonably steady hand!)

POTD: Clockworks #3

This clock on the inside of the courthouse bell-tower is supposed to show the time on the four outside clocks visible from around town. But, due to lack of parts, things weren’t quite working properly. While the clock mechanism was merrily chugging away, all five clocks showed different times.
