Pedestrian Paris Paris, France 2013

As busy as Paris streets are, the drivers treat pedestrians pretty well. Unlike some places I’ve been (including in the U.S.) I always felt like the drivers could be depended on to respect pedestrians in crosswalks and at stoplights. Still wandering around at night in black clothing might not be the smartest safety move. I must admit I do so myself (it’s just the color of most of my jackets and coats), but I have always assumed drivers just can’t see me even in broad daylight.]]>

Lectio #23 (The Arbus Twins on Vacation) Paris, France 2013

I found the bookstores of Paris to be quite fascinating, even though most all of them just had books in French. An exception is the famous Shakespeare and Company bookstore which even greeted me with an equally famous Diane Arbus photo in the front window.]]>

That’s a live goldfish in the bowl on top of the juggler’s head. In the very competitive street-performer race to have the most unique gimmick (to attract crowds and hopefully donations), this guy was way ahead.]]>

Maybe that’s not a smile; the mouth looks like it belongs to a scowl but it’s kind of hard to tell what the meaning of those eyes is. It’s also kind of hard to tell if this image on a post at the Pompidou Center is graffiti or something commissioned by the museum. Either way, it’s quite interesting.  ]]>

Some roller gears on a printing press at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris (Museum of Arts and Crafts). As convenient as modern computer-based methods of printing are, watching printed output come out of a laser or inkjet printer just doesn’t compare to an old-fashioned printing press. Nor are the parts as sculpturally interesting.]]>

Haves and Have-Nots Paris, France 2013

Paris is no place to be without a steady source of income. (Is anywhere you might ask? It’s just that everything is so expensive in Paris.) I did notice though that a lot of the beggars on the streets in Paris seemed to be much better dressed in cleaner clothes than the typical homeless person I see in the U.S. They also seemed to eat well in that I often saw them eating out of Tupperware containers with fresh looking salads and other healthy looking foodstuffs in them. I wonder why that is? Perhaps someone routinely provides them with supplies? Maybe I should look into it.]]>
