I’m told that the crescent (moon) shaped piece of steel on the wheel ofa steam engine train like this one is to counter-balance the weight of the shaft arm attachment on wheel’s opposite side. It has the same effect of balancing the tires on a car to make sure it’s wheels run smoothly.
