SAUDADE

These photographs explore visually the meaning of the Portuguese word “saudade” (pronounced sow-dahd-jee), which is said to be one of the ten non-English words most difficult to translate.  It has been described as an intense yearning for people, places, or times that are lost--but for which there is a potential, however slight, to regain.  It relates to the words nostalgia and melancholy, mixed also with joy.  Each of the photos depicts objects or scenes intended to evoke feelings of saudade.
